Bed bug prevention tips for your home
  • Wash all bedding regularly in hot water (at least 120 degrees) and dry it at a high temperature.
  • Thoroughly wash or dry clean curtains, rugs, drapes
  • Cover mattresses, pillows, and box springs with a high quality protective cover for bed bugs that resists tearing. Modern Pest Services offers KleenCover® mattress covers which are impermeable to dust mites, bed bugs, mold and bacteria.
  • Vacuum floors regularly. Use the vacuum brush tool to vacuum mattress and bedroom upholstery. Use the smaller vacuum attachments to vacuum crevices in the mattress, bedroom furniture and baseboards.
  • Reduce clutter to eliminate additional hiding spots for bed bugs.
  • Check your own bedroom for bed bugs from time to time. Catching bed bugs early will make treatment easier. A flashlight and magnifying glass may be helpful for close inspections.

  •     • Remove all bedding and check mattress and box spring thoroughly.

        • Examine cracks and crevices in bed frame and headboard, especially if       the frame is wood. (Bed bugs have an affinity for wood and fabric more       so than metal or plastic).

        • Examine bedroom furniture such as nightstands, dressers, upholstered         chairs, and sofas.

        • Check other common places to find bed bugs such as along and under         the edge of wall-to-wall carpeting, cracks in wood molding & ceiling-wall       junctures, behind wall-mounted picture frames, mirrors, switch plates &       outlets, under loose wallpaper, in nearby clothing and clutter, and inside      clocks, phones, televisions and smoke detectors.

  • Seal any cracks or holes in flooring and walls (especially around wires and pipes) to prevent the bugs from traveling inside or from neighboring apartments.
  • Avoid purchasing used furniture if possible. But if purchased, examine it carefully for bed bugs, paying special attention to used mattresses, bed frames and bedroom furniture.
  • If you spend time in crowded places (e.g. subways, movie theaters) or stay overnight at a friend or relative's house, check your clothing, shoes, pocketbook, knapsack, travel bag, etc. for bed bugs upon return.
