Usually bed bugs bite in rows, like 3-4 bites in a line. Check your bed, sofa, chairs and other furniture stuff. Bites alone are never a good indicator of bugs, everybody reacts differently. Unfortunately them being in a cluster, however, is characteristic of bed bugs.

After spending what seemed like millions on lice shampoo the only thing that worked thoroughly and quickly was using a hot flat iron on the hair. The live bugs were always killed by the shampoo but some nits always survived the combing and started the problem all over again. The super hot iron really did the trick. A couple treatments with that and the nits were dead and combed out easily. We just sectioned the hair like you would do to style it and made sure to get every area from scalp to ends. The only caution I would have is the child has to be able to stay still enough because the flat iron could burn them if the touched it. Otherwise, no chemicals and the process is not particularly unpleasant.
