Modern Pest Services – A Year In Review

Modern Pest Services ended the year on a great note and despite a still sluggish economy, we experienced steady growth and reached many of our business goals.  Here are a few highlights from the past year:

  • Modern expands with Wildlife – In March, Modern purchased a wildlife control company and over the course of the year we have built a solid foundation of wildlife work across Maine and New Hampshire placing dedicated Wildlife Service Professionals in four of our five service centers.

Say No to “Do-It-Yourself” Bed Bug Control

We know bed bugs are nasty pests and if you find them in your home, the first thing you want to do is get rid of them as soon as possible. However, popular, “do-it-yourself” pesticide treatments including bug bombs, repellent sprays, natural oils, and store bought chemical applications are not recommended. In fact, applying pesticides on your own or improperly using pesticides will not only prove to be ineffective, the results can also be dangerous to your home and your family’s health.

Modern Team Gathers for Fall Training

On December first, Modern Pest Services held its seasonal training seminar in Portland, ME, with over 120 employees in attendance, including service and sales professionals, administrative staff, contact center representatives, and members of management. Along with Spring training, the Fall training meeting ensures that Modern employees remain well-informed and up-to-date on new information in the pest control field. This season, we were joined by two guest speakers from top pest control companies.

Modern’s Richard Stevenson, A Member of the NPMA’s Blue Ribbon Bed Bug Task Force

Blue Ribbon Bed Bug Task Force addresses industry’s response to bed bugs.

At the invitation of The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) Modern Pest Services’ Co-President and Chief Technical Officer Richard Stevenson Jr. B.C.E. participated in the organizations’ ‘Blue Ribbon Bed Bug Task Force’ meeting that took place on October 22nd in Honolulu Hawaii. Members of the task force, which consist of prominent researchers, pest management professionals, and regulators, were asked to develop an industry-wide comprehensive response to the global bed bug pandemic that includes consideration of education, standards, policy and research.

Modern Pest Services treats bed bug infestation at Maine College

A recent case of bed bugs found in a Heights suite has been treated and is believed to be an isolated incident.

On Thursday, November 11 Associate Dean of Students and Director of Campus Life Jed Wartman and Director of the Physical Plant Patricia Murphy sent an email notifying the student body of a recent bed bug infestation in a Heights suite. Since this announcement, Campus Life, the Physical Plant Department (PPD) and the affected students have worked together to contain, control and prevent the spread of these bed bugs. Along with Modern Pest Control, a New England-based company, the College has treated the affected rooms and is confident that the situation is in good hands.

Bed Bugs Beware: EPA Plans Second National Bed Bug Summit

The EPA is planning its second national bed bug summit this winter in Washington, D.C.

With reports of bed bug activity only increasing throughout the country, especially in major urban centers like NYC where tourism is declining due to fear of bed bugs, it seems only fitting that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently planning their second national bed bug summit scheduled for this winter in Washington D.C.

The goals of last year’s bed bug summit, which drew 300 participants, included encouraging communication among diverse stakeholders and developing recommendations on how to address the problems posed by the bed bug resurgence. These goals were achieved through EPCA-facilitated workgroups that were comprised of pest control professionals, universities, public health organizations as well as federal, state and local government agencies, and others.

New England is seeing a resurgence of stink bugs

There has been alot of news about the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB)  plaguing homes and businesses in the mid-Atlantic states this fall. Homeowners are complaining that these flying insects are invading their homes by the dozens and folks in the fruit growing industry have seen the damage that these insects can cause on their fruit harvests. Unfortunately, these splotchy brown pests have found their way north and into the homes and businesses of New England.
