Carpenter ants are a common problem in New England. They can be found nesting in homes and generally make their presence known during the spring. Carpenter ants range in size from 3/8 to 1/2 an inch, although Queens can be as large as an inch in length. They are divided into different castes based on their role within the colony. In carpenter ant colonies you will find a queen, workers and male reproductive. Carpenter ants typically establish colonies in areas where moisture is present, but can still be found nesting in dry wood. Windows, leaky roofs and chimneys, bathtubs and sinks, and exterior areas that are in contact with soil such as firewood are well known carpenter ant "hot spots."

Carpenter Ants nest in dead tree branches and limbs. Trim or cut back any trees that are touching your roof or siding.	Don’t store your firewood directly on the ground or indoors, as it gets moist it becomes an attractive nesting spot.	Examine your home’s foundation and seal structural cracks in and around pipes or wiring that enter the home.	Carpenter Ants are attracted to moist wood. Repair leaky plumbing, gutters, chimneys or other areas where water may be causing wood to get moist.

Carpenter ants excavate wood, creating galleries and tunnels. Unlike termite galleries, these areas are clean and do not contain sawdust or other debris. The longer the colony is allowed to go untreated, the more damage the structure is likely to suffer. When the wood weakens, the home’s structure becomes vulnerable.
