A Family Affair

Modern Pest Services is a 3rd generation family owned and operated pest control company. Modern was founded in Woburn, Massachusetts in 1945 by Howard D. Stevenson, a door to door salesman who found he could earn a living by being an exterminator for store owners to control their rats and mice. In 1973 Howard retired and sold the company to his son Richard, who already had many years experience in the pest control industry, both in the United States and Canada. Since then Richard has been joined by his three sons; Scott (Chief Operations Officer), Richard Jr. (Chief Technical Officer) and Douglas (Chief Financial Officer). Today, with our multiple service centers, Modern serves all the New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) and is Northern New England's largest and fastest growing pest control firm.

Howard & His Wife
Founder Howard Stevenson started his career as a door-to-door salesman selling sundries in Woburn, Massachusetts. It was during this time that Howard Stevenson became aware of a new rodenticide that had just hit the market. Knowing the importance of pest control, Howard Stevenson began selling the product. He soon learned that he could make a living placing rodenticide for store owners to control rats and mice.

In 1945 Stevenson named his company Modern Pest Services. In 1947 a trip to Maine proved to be successful for Howard both in business and personally . He met his wife-to-be in an Augusta apartment building while providing pest control in the building. Soon after they were married and Howard moved his new family and the business to Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
