Contrary to its common name, the old house borer occurs primarily in houses less than 10 years old, attacking only new softwoods.	This beetle attacks hardwoods and usually limits its feeding to the sapwood portions. Structural timbers, lumber and manufactured products are most often attacked.	The deathwatch beetle attacks wood that has sustained some moisture damage and is already attacked by fungi.
