Termite Species in New England
Termites wreak havoc all around New England. Here are specifics about the five states where we provide highly effective termite control services: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
Termite Control in CT
Termites are commonly found in the Constitution State with the Eastern subterranean species being the most prevalent and destructive. This species ranges from ¼ to ⅜ of an inch in length with worker termites being cream colored without wings. Swarmers are black and winged, swarming in the early spring. If you spot this type of termite, the colony nearby (perhaps in your home) is likely well established. Note that swarmers can be confused with flying ants. Differences include how flying ants have a narrow waist that swarming termites don’t with termites coming with straighter antennae.
Termites cause problems across the state with no region safe from their harassment. So, whether you need Hartford termite control or help in Stamford or Norwich or a cozy small town, reach out to protect your investment in your home.
Termite Control in MA
Recognizing both the problems posed by termites and the need for professional termite extermination, Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources offers the following guidance: “Make sure you have a licensed applicator performing the job. Ask to see their license and check the expiration date to make sure it is current. If the applicator is using liquid termiticide the applicator should be certified in category 43 (termite control) or under the direct supervision of someone who is certified in this category. Supervising applicators do not have to be on the job site during the applications, but they must be readily available to the person applying the termiticide. If the applicator is not certified, ask for the name and license number of this certified applicator who is supervising the job.”
When you choose Modern Pest Services for your Springfield termite control or termite extermination elsewhere in the Bay State, you can proceed with confidence, knowing that we follow all safety and other regulatory procedures.
Termite Control in Rhode Island
Rhode Island experiences the same sort of termite problems as their sister states in New England with the Eastern subterranean species causing significant damage to homes. One reason why they’re so hard to eliminate with DIY products and methods is the termite’s incredible adaptability as they’ve survived and thrived over a period of 100 million years. Although they have an important biological purpose, which is to eat plant fiber in decaying or dead wood so that its nutrients can be used to enrich the soil, they all too often turn their attention to wood used to construct homes. Because they’re social creatures, they gnaw on a home’s wood in increasingly large numbers as they build their colonies. So, these forest recyclers quickly become home destroyers.
To rid your home of these highly destructive pests, connect with Modern Pest Services for termite control in Providence and elsewhere in the state of Rhode Island.
Termite Control in Maine
Although the same species that plagues Connecticut residents also causes problems in the Lumber State, termites are typically found in select areas in Maine (the southern and coastal parts of the state) rather than the whole area. So, while that’s good news for people living in areas of the state where termites don’t tend to congregate, this pest can cause enormous problems where they call home.
Maine author Lisa Margonelli shares a harrowing fact about termites in her book, Underbug: that, collectively, they outweigh humans by a ratio of ten to one. Margonelli calls termites both an “inconvenient insect” (now, there’s an understatement!) and “anticapitalist anarchists.” A New York Times review of this book also shares the gross fact that, scientifically, termites are shrunken, blinded descendants of the dreaded cockroach.
The bottom line, of course, is this: if termites have gotten into your home, you’ll want them out, ASAP. So, contact the experts at Modern Pest Services for fast, affordable termite control in Portland, ME or elsewhere in the state.
Termite Control in New Hampshire
Subterranean termites tend to congregate in the southern part of the Granite State, posing an ongoing threat where they reside. Whenever you suspect a termite presence (either by seeing them swarming in the area or because of the mud tubes they’ve created or damage they’ve done, reach out for a free termite inspection. Once Eastern subterraneans find a mate, they’ll settle down to start a colony where they can find ready moisture and wood to chew. Unfortunately, New Hampshire homes fit the description. Colonies develop slowly at first until the queen reaches her stride, laying 10,000 eggs annually. Once well established, the colonies can count in the millions. Seriously. They’re stealthy creatures, too, perhaps establishing a second colony in your home when they want to expand their territory.
To eradicate this infestation, contact us for termite control in Manchester or elsewhere in New Hampshire where termites are damaging your property. We’ll find where they’re hiding and get rid of them for good.
Termites and Climate Change
A disturbing report by Science is titled “Termites Love Global Warming So Much That They May Make It Worse”—which pretty much says it all. Data indicates that termites eat dead wood seven times faster when the temperatures are 30°C (86°F) versus 20°C (68°F). This, in turn, disturbs that cycle in which trees release carbon dioxide, increasing the amount in the atmosphere.
This can help to boost temperatures—likely further triggering the pace in which termites consume wood. Then the cycle can repeat itself. As the study alert notes, “We have long known human-caused climate change would favor a few winners but leave many losers. It would appear the humble termite is likely to be one such winner, about to experience a significant global expansion in its prime habitat.”
