Why Rodent Issues Aren’t a One-Time Fix

Rodents reproduce every 21–30 days and enter through holes as small as a dime. A single visit only removes the rodents you can see — not the root cause.

Nobody wants rats or mice in their homes—and there’s good reason to get them out. Besides the ick factor, rodents can carry and transmit more than thirty-five diseases, and their gnawing can damage your house’s structure, even triggering house fires.

With our rodent residential pest control service, you’ll get a safe solution for your infestation with minimal pesticide exposure for your family and pets. Seasonal preventative visits will give you continued peace of mind, also providing protection for more than fifty seasonal household pests.

Our ongoing program includes

Inspection and minor exclusion

We inspect your home and seal accessible minor entry points so new rodents can’t simply walk back in.

Monitoring for new activity

We can add SMART monitoring to monitor for fresh signs of activity so we can respond quickly before a small issue becomes a new infestation.

Coverage for 55+ other pests

Our ongoing service also protects your home from over 55 other pests that appear throughout the year—not just rodents.

Satisfaction Guarantee

If anything pops up between visits, you get unlimited callbacks at no additional cost, giving you true year‑round protection.

Types of Rats & Mice in New England

Here are the four most common species of rodent found in the region:

House Mouse

The house mouse lives throughout the New England states, slipping into homes—especially but not entirely during the colder months of the year. With fur ranging from light brown to nearly black in hue, they tend to be two to four inches long and have the ability to reproduce incredibly rapidly. A female can get pregnant when as young as six to ten weeks old, typically giving birth to up to ten litters of babies during their two-year-long lifetimes. Each litter can have half a dozen babies, adding to the growing number of mice in a home. To get this situation under control, reach out for our house mice control services.

Deer Mouse

If rodents in your home are slightly larger than the house mouse with coloration reminiscent of deer, then the species is likely to be the deer mouse. This species also reproduces with speed and, to add to the problem, this species spreads the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome to people who breathe in droppings, urine, or saliva from infected rodents. The disease begins with flu-like symptoms and can rapidly turn into a serious illness. So, don’t delay. Contact our mouse exterminator.

Norway Rat

These critters burrow wherever they want to go, and they appreciate living with people in homes where they can find food and water. You can visually differentiate the Norway Rat from the mouse because of its size; they grow to about eight inches in the length of their bodies and can have a tail that basically doubles its length. Colors can range from gray to gray-ish or reddish-brown. What’s the same as with mice: these rats quickly reproduce, turning a small presence into a true infestation. Reach out to our rat exterminator!

Roof Rat

While the Norway Rat burrows underground, the roof rat (as the name implies) would rather live in attics and other high places. Also called the black rat, that is one common color of this species although they can be gray; underbellies tend to be lighter. These creatures present all of the same problems described so far in this section. Rats and mice, across species, also bring lice, fleas, and other unwanted pests into the home. You know what to do.

Impact of Climate Change on Rodent Control

Climate control serves as the most important factor in the growing rat population in cities, according to a 2025 journal article in Science Advances. Increasing temperatures lengthen the time frame that rats and mice can forage for food outdoors and reproduce. The report also notes how, besides growing urban populations of rodents, these critters are also extending their geographic range. So, even areas that haven’t typically struggled with rodent problems may find rats and mice in their cities. As National Geographic succinctly summarizes the situation: “Climate change is amazing—if you’re a rat.”

Sixteen cities were examined more closely with eleven of them having significant increases in rat populations. One of them was Boston. Although there’s no definitive data on the city’s rat population’s numbers, complaints about Boston’s rat presence increased by fifty-three percent in the decade between 2011 and 2021.

The Science Advances study also notes a related problem, saying that “The very presence of rats also takes a measurable toll on the mental health of people living in contact with them.” This would include the five or ten percent of the population suffering from musophobia (rat phobias). In the city of Boston, that phobia could impact nearly 70,000 people. Here’s one more problem to consider. Climate change may already be boosting rat-transmitted diseases, particularly leptospirosis.

The reality is that pest control for rats is more important than ever before.

A Smarter Way to Stay Ahead of Rodents

Once we’ve blocked entry points and quieted current activity, SMART takes your protection even further. It watches your home around the clock, catching early signs of rodent pressure long before you’d ever notice them.

Setup is simple: we walk the home, place the sensors where rodents are most likely to move, and connect everything so the system can quietly do its job. From there, SMART alerts us the moment something changes—whether that’s renewed rodent activity or a new hotspot beginning to form.

Instead of relying on traps you have to check or waiting until you see rodents again, SMART keeps you protected automatically. We handle the follow‑ups, the resets, and the fixes, so you never have to deal with the mess or stress. It’s constant coverage that works in the background, giving you real peace of mind.

What are the signs of a rodent infestation?

By the time that you see a rat or mouse in your home, the infestation is likely to be significant. What you’re more likely to see first: rodent droppings, especially around food, including cupboards and under the sinks and around appliances; gnawed-on food packaging; shredded paper, cardboard, fabric, and the like for nesting usage; oily smears along baseboards; and holes that indicate entry points. Listen for rustling sounds, particularly at night, and pay attention to unexplained stale smells. If you know of or suspect a rodent presence in your New England home, reach out to our highly skilled rodent exterminators for a free inspection.

What’s the best rodent control?

At a high level, the answer is rodent control that safely, effectively, humanely, and cost-effectively removes the rats and mice from your home and keeps them out. Our rodent exterminators will eradicate the critters currently in your home and advise on exclusionary tactics to make it difficult for new ones to get inside. Our HomeCare Green pest control program takes care of rodents along with fifty-five-plus commonly found pests. Applied three times a year, you benefit with unlimited callbacks with your satisfaction 100% guaranteed.

For added protection, we offer SMART Defense, which is electronic rodent control for advanced monitoring and detecting in high-risk areas. This includes two smart eyes and modem and, if desired, you can add more eyes or smart catches for an added fee. With our SMART Exclusion Defense, on top of all this, our rodent exterminators will comprehensively inspect all potential entry points, provide a detailed risk assessment, and share customized recommendations.

What is the best way to keep rodents out of the house?

Use exclusionary techniques to make it difficult for rats and mice to get inside. As you do this, consider that a mouse could slip into a house in a hole as small as a dime. So, inspect the outside of your home, starting at the foundation (and including utility lines), and work your way to windows and doors. Inspect your roof, too, including rafters, eaves, soffits, and gables and in your attic and crawl spaces. Also inspect closets, around fireplaces, appliances, kitchen cabinets, sinks, and so forth.

Close up any gaps you find, depriving the rodents of easy on-ramps into your home as shelter. Also prevent them from finding food and water on your property by fixing leaks, firmly lidding garbage cans and keeping them away from your home’s foundation, and doing similar things indoors and in your garage and other outbuildings.

Our trained professionals will gladly help you to provide thorough exclusionary recommendations for your home.

Who should you call for rodent control?

You’ll want a professional company that provides safe, effective, long-term solutions for your geography. Modern Pest Services provides exactly that throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. So, if you need rodent control in Boston, MA or rodent control in Portland, Maine—or anywhere else in our quint-state area—just let us know!

What’s the difference between rats and mice?

Although both are rodents, they come with noticeable differences, starting with their size. A typical house mouse might be five to eight inches long, including their long thin tails, with larger ones weighing a half a pound or so. Colors range from white to gray to brown with mice having proportionately large ears and long whiskers. Rats are bigger with adults often being ten inches long, heftier than mice. Colors can be similar to those of mice (and can also include black). Unlike mice with hairy tails, rat tails often are scaly. Behavior-wise, rats can be more cautious than the curious mouse.

How do exterminators get rid of rodents?

Typical methods include the use of traps and bait stations with our rodent pest control experts also recommending exclusionary techniques to keep the rats and mice from returning. We also offer electronic rodent control techniques for advanced monitoring of high-risk areas.

How do I prepare for a rodent control visit?

You’ll want to remove any clutter to allow rodent exterminators free access to areas of your home, keeping your pets in a separate safe space. Be prepared to share any new concerns and insights with your exterminator and ask any questions you have. Each home and situation is unique, so your rodent pest control expert will provide personalized information as well.

What kind of property damage can rodents do?

Rodents can be furry wrecking crews in homes, chewing through walls, insulation, and wires (with the latter having the potential to trigger a house fire). If you’ve got a rodent infestation in your home, you may well see gnaw marks on wood, plastic, and even metal thanks to their extra-sharp teeth and chewing behaviors. Outdoors, they can destroy flowers, landscaping, vegetable gardens, and more.
