Spring

Spring is a rebirth in New England and bugs start to emerge throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Pests love spring weather as much as we do! Many insect species hibernate during the winter months and begin to reappear in spring.

Most pests flourish in warm weather and enjoy the rain, blooming flowers, and adundant food sources spring brings. Many insect species also mate in spring.

It’s common to see termites, ants, flies, mosquitoes, spiders, earwigs, and stinging insects like wasps and hornets.

It’s easier to identify these pests when you know more about them. For example, mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Termite swarms can be found swarming around your home in the spring and are a sign you could have termite issues now or in the future. Stinging insects, such as yellow jackets and wasps, will gather around flowers.

Summer

New England summers continue getting warmer and insects continue to flourish.

Since humans and pets also enjoy getting out in the warm weather, they become a food source when pests feed on their blood. This includes mosquitoes, ticks, and bedbugs. With increased summer travel, summer is prime bed bug season. Birds and various wildlife can also become a nuisance in summer.

Expect to see fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, bats, ants, stinging insects, termites, bed bugs, and flies.

Fall

Fall is a welcome change to the heat and humidity of the New England summer. The weather starts to cool and the leaves change color. Some pests remain an issue, and some are added to the lineup. Insects and animals like mice, rats, and raccoons seek shelter, food, and water to prepare for the colder months and your home could be the perfect place.

Expect to see rats and mice, stink bugs, spiders, and fleas.

How do you prevent pests from infesting your home? Don’t let them get in in the first place! Seal up any entry points. Don’t provide sustenance. Secure food sources in pest-proof containers and stop any water leaks. Don’t stack firewood inside or too close to your home. Clean up piles of leaves.

Winter

Cold and snowy New England winters don’t mean a reprieve from pests. Pests will still be seeking shelter from the elements and trying to get inside your home. Damp places are a draw for many pests, so try to keep bathrooms, kitchens, and basements dry.

Expect to find cockroaches, rodents, stink bugs, ladybugs, and silverfish.

If you continue to keep pests out of your home and remove food and water sources, you’ll have fewer pest issues. When you bring holiday decorations back inside, make sure there aren’t any pest hitchhikers tagging along. Make sure winter storms haven’t created any new openings to your home.
