ice dams

Ice Dam

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof when heat escapes from the attic or top level of the home and melts snow.  The melting snow refreezes when it contacts the cold air creating the ice buildup and preventing additional snow melt from draining as it should. The water can seep back into the home creating serious damage to the home’s insulation, drywall, and electrical systems. It may lead to dangerous rotting wood, mold, and pest issues in the spring.
