Bats are the only mammals that are naturally capable of flying for any length of time. When they fly into our New England homes they are considered pests, but in nature, they are effective at regulating populations of insects that cause us so much trouble. Throughout the world, bats are known for being very beneficial mammals; they help with pollinating flowers and dispersing fruit seeds. In the U.S., we have between 45 and 48 species of bats, with the 3 most common species being the little brown bat, the big brown bat and the Mexican free-tailed bat. You may best know squirrels for their tendency to dash across the road in front of your oncoming car but did you know that squirrels are also a major pest problem in some homes in New England?
